The three tags that matter

Source says where the visit came from (a newsletter, a platform, a partner). Medium says the type of channel (email, social, referral, cpc). Campaign names the specific push. Term and content are optional extras for paid keywords and for telling two links in one email apart.

Pick a naming rule and stick to it

Analytics treats Email and email as different values. Decide on lowercase, no spaces and a consistent pattern such as month-product-channel, write it down, and use it for every link.

Do not tag internal links

UTM tags are for links from outside your site to your site. Putting them on links between your own pages can break the original source of a visit.

Shorten before sharing

Long tagged URLs look untidy in social posts and print. Use your own short link or a link-shortener you trust, and test that the tags survive the redirect.

Questions people ask

Do UTM tags change what visitors see?

No. They are only read by analytics tools. The page loads exactly as before.

Do I need Google Analytics for this?

No. Any analytics tool that reads UTM parameters, including simple server-side counters, can use them.

Is my URL sent to you?

No. The link is built in your browser.
