WhatsApp Order Updates and Cart Recovery for Shopify
Order confirmations, shipping updates and abandoned-checkout reminders sent over the official WhatsApp Business Platform, with consent captured, quiet hours respected and a person ready to take over.
Shopify WhatsApp automation for orders and abandoned checkouts
Shopify can send order and abandoned-checkout messages to customers on WhatsApp if you connect the store to the official WhatsApp Business Platform, use Meta-approved templates and only message people who agreed to hear from you on that channel. Shopify raises the events (an order placed, a package fulfilled, a checkout left behind) and a workflow tool such as n8n turns each one into the right template message. Order updates and cart reminders fall into different Meta categories with different rules, so they are built separately. A person can take over when a customer writes back. This page sets out the rules first, then the flows, and notes where Shopify Flow or a marketing platform is the better fit.
A written map of which store events send which WhatsApp template, covering order confirmation, dispatch, delivery and abandoned checkout, and which of them need marketing consent.
Template drafts worded to suit Meta's category definitions, submitted through your own WhatsApp Business account, with a plan for when a template is rejected or recategorised.
A consent step in your checkout journey or post-purchase flow, with the answer, time and source stored against the customer record.
Workflows that receive Shopify webhooks, de-duplicate repeated deliveries, look up the customer's stored consent for that message type, and only then send the matching approved template to the customer.
Abandoned-checkout reminders that stop the moment an order is completed, and that include the checkout's own recovery link without an invented discount or urgency.
Quiet hours based on the customer's country, so messages queue overnight and leave in the morning unless you decide a message is time-critical.
Handoff rules that pass a customer's reply to a person in your team's inbox, pause automation for that customer, and resume only when told.
Failure alerts for rejected sends, paused templates and expired credentials, and a log of every message with its reason for being sent.
Which WhatsApp messages can a Shopify store send, and under what rules?
Meta requires every template to be authentication, marketing or utility. Pricing depends on the category, and delivered messages are charged individually (as of November 2026; check Meta's pricing page, which publishes rates by category and country). Outside an open 24-hour customer service window, only approved templates can be sent.
| Message | Meta category | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Order confirmation | Utility | Must not promote, upsell or cross-sell |
| Dispatch and delivery update | Utility | Same rule; adding an offer can turn it into marketing |
| Abandoned-checkout reminder | Marketing | Meta's template guidelines treat cart reminders as retargeting, marketing “even if requested by users” |
| Reply to a customer who just wrote | Free-text allowed | Only while the 24-hour window is open |
Meta can change a template's category to marketing if it judges the content promotional, and can pause templates that attract negative feedback. Templates are reviewed on creation, and review can take up to 24 hours. Build the flow so a paused or rejected template alerts a person instead of failing quietly.
How do you capture WhatsApp consent at checkout?
WhatsApp's business policy allows messaging only people who have given you their number and agreed to receive messages, and requires you to honour requests to stop, whether made on or off WhatsApp. How you collect that agreement is your responsibility under applicable law. This is general information, not legal advice, so confirm it with your own adviser.
Shopify has native consent for email and SMS marketing (its webhook for consent changes refers to SMS marketing consent). We could not find a native WhatsApp opt-in, so treat it as your own record: a clearly worded checkbox or post-purchase form, stored against the customer with the wording, date and source, for example in a tag or customer field. Keep order-update consent and marketing consent as separate answers, because they cover different message categories.
Handling names, emails and phone numbers also brings Shopify's protected customer data rules for apps: access to those fields is requested separately, and Shopify lists data minimisation and encryption among the requirements. Custom apps can use the data but the rules differ by plan.
How does an order update reach the customer?
- Trigger. Shopify sends a webhook. Its documented topics include order creation, order paid and fulfilment creation, plus fulfilment events for tracking changes. An n8n webhook receives it.
- De-duplicate. Shopify's webhook guidance recommends ignoring duplicate deliveries using the X-Shopify-Webhook-Id header and says delivery is not always guaranteed. The workflow stores that ID, ignores repeats, and runs a periodic check for orders it never heard about.
- Check consent and number. No consent record or no valid mobile number means no WhatsApp message; the customer keeps getting Shopify's normal emails.
- Quiet hours. If it is night where the customer lives, the message waits.
- Send. n8n's WhatsApp Business Cloud node has a send-template operation. The message carries the order number, status and tracking link, and nothing promotional.
- Watch the outcome. The WhatsApp Trigger node can listen for message and template-status events, so a failure is logged and a rejected template raises an alert.
Human approval is not needed on each update, since the content is fixed. A person approves the template wording once, and reviews exceptions such as cancelled or split orders.
How does abandoned-checkout recovery work, and when does it stop?
Shopify treats a checkout as abandoned when it stays incomplete for more than ten minutes after contact details were entered, and the checkout carries a recovery URL for getting the customer back. Shopify's own recovery emails cover email only, so a checkout with just a phone number gets no email reminder.
For WhatsApp, the workflow receives the checkout webhook, then waits a period your team chooses. Just before sending it checks three things again: has an order been placed, does the customer have marketing consent for WhatsApp, and is it a quiet hour. Only then does it send a marketing template with the recovery link. One reminder is a sensible default and a second should be a deliberate choice; no tool should send an endless chain.
We do not promise recovery rates and have no figures to quote. Test one reminder against none, and judge by your own orders.
What happens when the customer replies, and when is Flow or Klaviyo enough?
Handoff. Replies arrive through WhatsApp's webhook. The workflow pauses automated messages to that customer, opens the conversation for a person with the order details beside it, and keeps free-text answers inside the 24-hour window. A message reading stop or unsubscribe updates the consent record immediately. Where you want a quick yes or no from staff, n8n's send-and-wait step can pause for an answer.
Shopify Flow. Flow is free on Basic and higher plans and has triggers such as customer abandons checkout, order created, order fulfilled and fulfilment created. Its Send HTTP Request action is limited to Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. It suits simple rules inside Shopify. See our Flow, n8n and Zapier comparison.
Klaviyo. Klaviyo's help centre says a WhatsApp Business account can be connected to it, so if you already run it, check that first. A custom workflow earns its place when messages depend on other systems, such as couriers or a warehouse, or when you need your own quiet-hour and handoff rules.
What shapes the scope and who builds it?
Every project is quoted individually. The drivers are the number of message types, countries and languages, how many systems besides Shopify supply data, how consent is captured, and how conversations are handed to your team. WhatsApp per-message charges, tool subscriptions and hosting are paid to those vendors and change over time. We use only the official WhatsApp Business Platform, not unofficial WhatsApp Web tools.
Website Prism's founder brings 8+ years and 800+ delivered projects, mostly through Fiverr, and Website Prism Ltd was incorporated in 2026; this is general build experience, not evidence of WhatsApp results for stores like yours. See Shopify automation, WhatsApp AI chatbot automation, the e-commerce workflow guide, or contact us.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Shopify send order updates over WhatsApp?
Yes, through the official WhatsApp Business Platform. Shopify raises order and fulfilment events as webhooks, and a workflow tool sends an approved utility template for each one. Shopify does not do this on its own, so you need a WhatsApp Business account, approved templates and customer consent for the channel.
Is an abandoned cart message marketing or utility on WhatsApp?
Marketing. Meta's template guidelines list cart reminders under retargeting and say these are marketing even when requested by users. That means the customer needs marketing consent, the message is billed at the marketing rate, and it cannot be disguised as an order update. Disguising it risks recategorisation.
Do I need customer consent for WhatsApp messages?
Yes. WhatsApp's business policy says you may message someone only if they gave you their number and agreed to receive messages, and you must honour requests to stop. Laws also differ by country. This is general information, so confirm your position with your own adviser.
Is this different from Klaviyo or Shopify Flow?
Partly. Flow handles rules inside Shopify and Klaviyo is a marketing platform that can connect a WhatsApp Business account. A custom workflow is worth considering when you need data from other systems, your own quiet hours, or specific handoff rules. If Flow or Klaviyo already does the job, use them.
Can a person take over the chat?
Yes. When a customer replies, automated messages to them pause and the conversation goes to your team with the order details alongside. While the 24-hour window is open they can answer freely, and automation resumes only when someone tells it to.
Which Shopify events can start the messages?
Shopify's webhook topics include checkout creation and update, order creation, order paid, order fulfilled, fulfilment creation and fulfilment events. Shopify Flow offers matching triggers, such as customer abandons checkout. Which you use depends on the message and on the permissions your app has been granted.
