Zapier Alternatives for GDPR: UK and EU Data Options Compared
Usama · November 6, 2026
If you need a Zapier alternative that keeps data in the UK or EU, the realistic options are self-hosted n8n, self-hosted Activepieces, Make with an EU data zone, and Activepieces' EU cloud. Zapier itself states that it hosts data on AWS servers in the United States and does not support EU-only storage, though it offers a data processing addendum and certification under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
This is general information for business owners, not legal advice. Data protection law depends on your facts, so have a solicitor or your data protection officer confirm any choice. Vendor details below were read on their own pages on 6 November 2026 and can change.
What does GDPR actually ask of an automation platform?
An automation tool that touches personal data (names, emails, order details, support messages) is usually your processor, and you are the controller. Four things follow, at a general level.
- A written contract. Article 28 requires a binding contract setting out what is processed and why, that the processor acts only on your documented instructions, that its staff are bound by confidentiality, that it helps with data subject requests, and that data is deleted or returned when the service ends. Most vendors publish a standard data processing agreement (DPA) for this.
- Sub-processors. The processor needs your authorisation to bring in other processors, and must tell you about changes under a general authorisation. In automation this list matters: the cloud host, an email sender and any AI model provider your workflow calls are all sub-processors in practice.
- Transfers outside the UK or EEA. Sending personal data to a country without an adequacy decision needs a recognised safeguard, commonly Standard Contractual Clauses, or an approved framework such as the EU-US Data Privacy Framework for certified companies. UK organisations have their own equivalent tools; ask your adviser which apply.
- Security and minimisation. Send only the fields a step needs, and keep execution logs only as long as required.
"EU data region" is therefore one useful control, not a compliance badge. Support access from other countries, AI calls and logging can still move data. The ICO and EU regulators publish guidance on controller and processor contracts, and the official text of Article 28 GDPR is short enough to read in one sitting.
Which Zapier alternatives offer a UK or EU data option?
| Platform | Hosting model | Licence | EU data option (per vendor pages) | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| n8n | Self-host, or n8n Cloud | Sustainable Use License (source-available); paid Business and Enterprise tiers | Cloud: Frankfurt storage stated on pricing FAQ. Self-host: any region you choose | Technical teams, high-volume or looping workflows, strict data control |
| Activepieces | Self-host, or Activepieces Cloud | Community Edition under MIT; enterprise features under a commercial licence | Pricing page offers an EU cloud in Frankfurt, another region on request, or your own servers | Teams wanting an open-source, permissively licensed builder |
| Make | Cloud only | Proprietary | Organisation-level data zones US1, US2, EU1, EU2; AI features have caveats | Non-technical builders who want a managed service with an EU zone |
| Pipedream | Cloud | Hosted platform; check its terms | Docs state AWS us-east-1 and mention no EU region; DPA includes SCCs | Developers who want code-first workflows and accept US hosting |
| Zapier | Cloud only | Proprietary | None: states US hosting and that EU-only storage is not supported; DPA with SCCs; DPF certified | Teams that value its app catalogue and rely on transfer safeguards |
How good is the n8n self-hosting route?
Self-hosted n8n puts workflows, credentials and execution data on a server you choose, in a region you choose. n8n's privacy docs say that for self-hosted versions it is neither a controller nor a processor, because it does not manage your data, and that the data stays on your infrastructure. You still sign terms with whichever company hosts the server. The licence is source-available: internal business use is permitted, and n8n's FAQ explicitly allows consulting and automation work for clients as long as the clients do not access the n8n interface. Hosting it as a service for others is not. The trade-off is work: updates, backups, security. Our guide to self-hosting versus n8n Cloud costs that work out.
If you would rather not run servers, n8n Cloud is stated to store hosted-plan data in Frankfurt, with a DPA that includes SCCs. Its sub-processor page lists Microsoft Azure in the EU for infrastructure, and AI providers in the US, so a workflow with an AI step sends data to those providers too.
What should you know about Make's EU zones?
Make's help centre describes a data zone (US1, US2, EU1 or EU2) as a setting on your organisation. It also warns, in its own words, that selecting an EU zone does not automatically mean every request is processed and stays in the EU. Some features, including Make's AI web search and OpenAI models used through Make's AI provider, send requests to the US regardless of zone. Two Claude models are served from a UK region, and bringing your own AI connection removes Make's EU guarantee. Make publishes a data processing agreement (the version I read is dated May 2024). It says that for customers in the EEA who contract with Celonis, Inc., the EU-US Data Privacy Framework is the primary transfer mechanism, with Standard Contractual Clauses as the fallback, and it points to a sub-processor list in Make's terms and conditions.
I could not confirm from Make's official pages which data centre city hosts the EU zones, and community answers disagree, so check the sub-processor list and ask Make in writing if location matters. Also check whether an existing organisation can switch zones; a community reply suggested it cannot without an Enterprise plan, which I could not verify officially.
Where do Activepieces and Pipedream fit?
Activepieces is the closest to a Zapier-style builder with an open-source core. Its GitHub README says the Community Edition is released under the MIT licence, with enterprise features under a commercial one. Its pricing page lists a free tier with 1,000 credits, paid tiers by credits, and the EU cloud in Frankfurt. The catalogue of integrations is smaller than Zapier's or Make's, so list the apps you must connect and check each one before moving.
Pipedream suits developers who want to write code in steps. Its privacy docs say it runs on AWS in us-east-1, name no EU region, and say its DPA includes Standard Contractual Clauses. That can be acceptable with proper safeguards, but it will not satisfy a rule that data must stay in the EU.
How do you choose?
- Data must stay in the UK or EU, and you have a technical person: self-host n8n or Activepieces on a UK or EU server.
- Data should stay in the EU, nobody wants servers: n8n Cloud, Activepieces EU cloud, or Make with an EU zone, after reading the AI caveats.
- Transfers are acceptable with safeguards: Zapier or Pipedream with a signed DPA can work, if your adviser agrees.
- Any option: map which workflows touch personal data, strip fields before AI steps, shorten log retention, and record the sub-processors you rely on.
Our post on balancing AI personalisation with data privacy goes deeper on the data minimisation side. If you want a migration plan from Zapier, the n8n workflow automation service describes how we rebuild and test workflows before switching them off.

Talk to the team →Frequently asked questions
Is Zapier GDPR compliant?
Zapier publishes a DPA with Standard Contractual Clauses and says it is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. It also says data is hosted in the US and EU-only storage is not supported. Whether that suffices depends on your data and adviser.
Is self-hosting n8n automatically GDPR compliant?
No. It gives you control over where data sits, but you remain responsible for security, retention, access control and your agreement with the server host.
Does Make store data in the EU?
Make offers EU1 and EU2 data zones. Its help centre says some AI features process data in the US or UK regardless of zone, so check the features you use.
Which alternative is best for UK businesses?
No single answer. Self-hosting on a UK or EU server gives the most control; managed options with EU hosting trade control for convenience. Ask each vendor for its DPA and sub-processor list.
Do AI steps change the picture?
Yes. A prompt sent to a model provider is a transfer to that sub-processor, so check its location and terms, or use a model hosted in your chosen region.
